Emak-Bakia- Man Ray (1926)

The film above was made by American filmmaker Emmanuel Radnitzky (1890-1976), professionally known as Man Ray. Best known as a painter, he also shot avant-garde photography and films like the one above. He grew up in South Philadelphia, but spent most of his career in Paris.

"I have been accused of being a joker. But the most successful art to me involves humor."
Man Ray was known for his dada and surrealist art, which was why i chose him to write about. Surrealism is my favorite style of art and i love the way that all of the artists of the time were thinking and inventing new ways to view and create art. Man Ray touched home with me because of his South Philly upbringing and his way of thinking.

persistance of vision- the zoetrope

Last week we were asked to make a zoetrope. The oldest form of a moving picture; using bristol, illustration board, markers, dowels, and some tape I made my own zoetrope. The two slides i made to move around were simple, but fun to draw. Each was a series of 8 pictures slowly moving so that when you rotate the zoetrope it appears to move. The first was a robot jumping up and down and doing a cartwheel, it was definitely my favorite of the two. The second was a heart morphing into the state of new jersey, and with each frame it got darker and darker. I really enjoyed this project because it easily amused me everytime i turned the zoetrope and made me feel like a kid again.

Above is one of the better zoetrope videos i found, the concept is really cool and it works really well.

hmm...GO GIANTS!
